The political rulers of England and France called Christians to travel to the Holy lands in the Middle East. However, it was not to fight the enemies of the church because the holy lands were under control of Muslims and Muslims were not enemies of the church. It was the opposite. There were very good relations between Muslim leaders and Christian leaders. the holy lands were not only for Christians but also for Muslims. The full rights were secured for all Christians to practice their worships with no limitations. The fights against Muslims in the Middle East at that time, which was known as the Crusaders wars, were for political reasons and never were for religious reasons.

You're referring to the four Crusades, which Christianity launched on Islam in the Middle Ages. They were known as holy wars, because the church believed that it was Jesus's will to retake the site of Jesus's life and death from the Muslims. Actually, Jesus was a pacifist, so it doesn't make any sense.
