About 2,500 years ago, Switzerland was inhabited by Celtic tribes, of which the Helvetii were the most important. About 2,000 years ago, the Romans expanded their empire to include the region of present-day Switzerland. Eventually it was ruled by multiple (and often warring) counts and kings, which allowed the local inhabitants to declare their sovereignty.
