Argentina disputes this and claims that the islands belong to them. But there is no evidence of Argentina ever claiming or settling on the islands. As far as history is concerned, the Falkland Islands belong to the United Kingdom, the first country to legally claim ownership of them. Argentina disputes this legitimate claim purely because they want the oil that surrounds the islands.
