Another exception is the Aqua Virgo in Rome. It was repaired by Pope Adrian I in the 8th century. In 1453, Pope Nicholas V consecrated it following a complete restoration and extensive remodelling. More work was carried out in 1840 and 1936. It supplied water to most of the city centre until the mid-20th century. Because of soil pollution, it is no longer used for drinking water. Now it only supplies the monumental fountains of the city centre, including the Trevi fountain.
