Monroe ran against Rufus King in 1816. The more serous opposition came from his own party and Secretary of War Willimam Crawford from GA. In 1820,he did not have anybody who wanted to run against him.

James Monroe was the 5th US president he won two terms for the presidency. He served from 1817 to 1825. His opponents were Rufus King in the election of 1816, and there were basically no opponents in the 1820 election except that John Quincy Adams received one electoral vote.During Monroe's presidency, the Convention of 1818 fixed the boundary between the US and British North America. In 1819, Spain agreed to give Florida to the US in exchange for the cancellation of $5 million in debts. In 1820, Congress adopted the Missouri Compromise that for its time ended disputes over slavery. In 1823, with the support of Great Britain, proclaimed his famous Monroe Doctrine warning European powers not to interfere in Western Hemisphere politics.
