Peter the apostle, who previously held name Simon. Rock is Petra in greek, so you know now what is this name from. However i.e. when St Paul wrote about Peter, he always called him using aramaic word for rock - Kefas, but it's the same. He is rock because he is foundation of Church - the rock on which it is build. This rock are now popes - succesors of St Peter. they are sign of stability, and continuation, and (not for everyone) unity.
