'Disciples' can follow ANYone.

A 'disciple' is a taught one, a learner, a pupil.

If you're speaking of Jesus' disciples, then it was JESUS that they followed.

They were 'footstep followers' of Christ.

When Jesus died, they followed what Jesus had taught them, as well as observing those who knew him best and patterned their lives after Jesus.(1 Corinthians 11:1).

Then, as today, we have principles and laws, a clear record of Jesus' life, and the life of his apostles, as well as the Hebrew scriptures, outlining those who found favor with God and those who did not, so we can have a very good idea HOW to be loyal to God, and CONTINUE to be disciples of Jesus.
