Who was the first person to discover Maine?

Who discovered Maine? No one seems to know for sure. Some people think that Leif Ericson and the Vikings landed in Maine 500 years before Columbus landed in the West Indies, in the 11th century. It was long believed that John Cabot had explored it in 1498 but that has recently been disputed. Nobody knows for sure, but by the late 1500's ships from Europe were in the area, with various Spanish, Portugese, French and English explorers making trips.
