Chinese and Arabs traded with Sri Lanka between 10-15th Century AD and since then Sri Lanka was occupied by Portuguese, Dutch and English, and was given independence in 1948.

They in the Parliament changed the name from Ceylon to Republic Sri Lanka (Notes: SL-Srilanka Independence was finally granted in 1948 but the country remained as dominion to British Empire until 1972).
