Spanish explorers reached what is now Texas in the early 1500s. Spanish missionaries built the first settlements in 1682. Most of the region was controlled by Spain until 1821, when Mexico won its independence from Spain, and Texas became part of Mexico. American settlers in Texas revolted against Mexican rule in 1836. Texas then became an independent republic. In 1845 Texas became a state.
