No, Le Verrier did not discover the planet of Mercury; there have been several historic documents, including a few from Ancient Greek times that have recorded sightings of Mercury. Rather, Le Verrier discovered, or played a significant part in discovering the planet of Neptune.

Le Verrier used only mathematical and astronomical calculations in his prediction, and obtained his figures from the orbital path of Neptune's closest neighbouring planet, Uranus. His mathematics were surprisingly accurate, as the planet was found only 1° away from its predicted location.
