Richie Havens The original Woodstock 1969 lineup had the band Sweetwater starting the festival off. Unfortunately, they had problems within the band and had to pass up this prestigious honor to Richie Havens. Nearly 2 and a half hours after they were supposed to go on, Sweetwater would be the third act and first band to perform at Woodstock 1969.

Since the legendary concert at Woodstock, NY in 1969, bands have been playing that same venue every ten years or so. The bands playing at Woodstock in 2009 were Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat, Edgar Winter, Melanie, and several others.
Jimi performed with his band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, not with the Jimi Hendrix Experience that original Woodstock promoters stated. Bassist Billy Cox (who would later be part of the Band of Gypsies group that Hendrix debuted a few months after Woodstock), drummer Mitch Mitchell (from The Experience), guitarist Larry Lee and two percussionists performed with Hendrix during the festival and Hendrix's Woodstock group was the largest band he had ever performed with.
