Prairie dogs feed on leaves, grasses and grass roots, weeds, seeds and other plants (including crops like alfalfa and corn). They also eat grasshoppers, cutworms, bug and beetles.

The prairie dog lives in the grassland biome in North American prairie and grassland where there are three distinct areas of prairie - Tallgrass prairie, Mixed-grass prairie and Shortgrass prairie. In the United States, the greatest stretch of grassland is the prairie, extending from the Appalachians in the East to the Rocky Mountains in the West. Being in the center of the North American land mass, far from the moderating influence of major bodies of water, there is a great range of annual temperature. The dominant vegetation in these biotic communities is blue grama, mixed with galleta grass, Indian rice grass, and other grasses.

Prairedogs eat vegetables Such as raw sweet potatoes, brocolley, carrots, ferrot pellets and Timothy hay. Never give them anything with alfalfa in it it could kill the little fellers and we dont want that. Just be sure they can get a lot of excersize to run all that food off.

No, Prairie dogs are herbivores.

Actually, prairie dogs are omnivores. They will eat bugs, worms, eggs (usually a sparrow's egg.) And if need be, they are also canibles. They will kill any Prairie Dog who tries to hook up with their females..

Prairie Dogs make great pets, as long as you are aware what a prairie dog needs.

First: Your prairie dog MUST be neutered or spayed in the summer before school starts. This is a must, because if you don't do this before October 1st, you have to wait until May 15th. The reason you have to do this at these certain times is because if you do this between October thru May, the sudden drop of hormones may kill them. The reason why they need this surgery in the first place is because they go thru a thing commonly called "Ghost Time". It start in Mid October and ends in June. Your cute cuddlely little pet turns into a possessed animal that will rip you hand off your arm. (Not really, but he/she will bite really bad).

Second: You can only feed the prairie dog certain foods. Timothy hay, dried vegetables, dried fruit, and sometimes as a treat sweet stuff. My prairie dog LOVES cheesecake, strawberries, watermelon, and cheese crackers. They need fresh food and water EVERY DAY!!! Also, DO NOT EVER FEED YOUR PRAIRIE DOG ALFALFA!!! This will give him kidney stones and it will kill them!!!

Third: Prairie dog are very social animals. Either the teacher, or trust worthy students need to take them home on the weekends. If this isn't done, your prairie dog will be mad with you and may take it out on you. If you have a holiday that gives you more than 2 days off from school, they ABSOLUTELY need t6o go home with someone. They need to have someone there so that the prairie dog knows that people care for them... In rare insidents they can be driven insane.

Fourth: When choosing a vet, make sure that they have dealt with Prairie dogs before. If they call your PD (Prairie dog) a beaver or a squerril, find a new vet ASAP. If you are limited with vets, have your vet write to me and I'll send them all the information that they'll need to take good care of them. Your PD does not need any shots or licenses. If you want your PD to get a rabies shot, that's ok. But that is the only shot you should give it.

Other than that, they make WONDERFUL pets. They are very loyal and loving. They can be trained to do alot of different tricks, and are very smart. What will happen is every day when you open up your classroom, the prairie dog will throw his paws up in the air and go "Yeehaw!!!". That's his way of saying, "Hi! I missed you. What is gonna happen today?" He also does the Yeehaw when someone coughs or sneezes, or just wants some attention. I used to carry my PD inside my shirt 75% of the day and ALWAYS slept with him in my shirt at night. He never poop or pee while in my shirt and at night when he had to go, he would crawl out of my nightshirt, jump off the bed, get in his cage, do his bussiness and crawl back in my shirt under the covers. I did not train him to do that, he did it on his own.

CAUTION: There will be people that your prairie dog will not like. When ever he chitters his teeth (Like he is grinding them), leave him in the cage and hav4e that person step away from the cage. That's his warning of "I don't like you. Come closer to me and I will attack you!!!" If that person does not step away, or even worse teases him/her or tries to calm him/her down, It will climb on the cage and spray urine at that person.

I've had 2 prairie dogs in my life. Both were males, and I loved them very much. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to write to me at Leahla1979@Yahoo.com . As far as what sex you should choose, I always had a male. They were great. But from my understanding, the females are wonderful too.

How did prairie dogs recover their population?

Prairie dogs lost much of their population because they ate crops that farmers grew. Consequently, they were killed, either by smoking them out of their burrows, shooting them, or having house pets hunt them down. After they became a much less populated species, people began to stop killing them so that they could repopulate. It is because prairie dogs are no longer killed that they have become more common. There is also less farmland than there was before, and farms are usually too large to keep all the prairie dogs under control. The species is now safe because they are no longer killed.
