Who explored the Louisiana purchase?
Meriweather Lewis and William Clark were sent by Jefferson to explore the new territory. There were 33 people in the party including Sacajawea and her husband and son.
US President Thomas Jefferson brokered the purchase of the Louisiana territory from Napoleon. Jefferson chose his personal secretary, and neighbor Meriwether Lewis, to lead the exploration of the new US territory. When he needed a partner, however, to help his expedition, Lewis agreed to have William Clark to share the leadership of the exploration of the Louisiana Territory. Panfilo de Narvaez was one of the first European explorers to visit Louisiana, in 1528. Hernando de Soto followed the Mississippi River down to the Gulf of Mexico in 1543. Robert Cavelier de La Salle named the region Louisiana in 1682 as the French explored the region (named in honor of France's King Louis XIV). Note that the United States acquired the territory in the Louisiana Purchase on December 20, 1803.
