It was first celebrated as a holy holiday on a.d. 325.

Easter was originally a pagan celebration of the goddess Ishtar (not a Christian holiday). The early Christians celebrated Passover and not Easter. The Roman Catholic church started celebrating Easter and then the Protestants did later. The resurrection of Christ has nothing to do with Easter bunnies and eggs. Those are fertility symbols from the pagan Easter. Many Christians call it Resurrection Day instead of the pagan name of Easter.

Answer. Some think that the early church practiced a holiday called Easter.. this is not true. The name Easter originally came from Eostre. Eostre was the ancient Greek goddess of spring. Pagan festivals were held every year to honor her because it was believed that she had returned and brought with her the light of day. This festival marked the return of longer days and it also coincided with the Vernal Equinox Answers.comis on the twenty-first day of March every year. The early Greeks did not fully understand at that time why the days became shorter and then turned longer again. They were afraid that if they did not worship the goddess of spring, that she would stop returning and the sunlight would not return either.

The Christian church changed the pagan holiday into the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And, instead of the holiday being held on the spring equinox, the date was changed. In the year of 325 AD, the Church Council of Nicaea decided that Easter would be celebrated on the very first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Because of their decision, the date of the Easter holiday differs from year to year. It can be celebrated as early as March twenty-second or as late as April twenty-fifth.

Easter is a day that is honered by nearly all of contemporary Christianity and is used to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The holiday often involves a church service at sunrise, a feast which usually includes an "Easter Ham", decorated eggs, and bunnies.

Many ancient peoples worshipped the sun, and celebrated in spring when the long winter was over. Some of these traditions have been incorporated into modern celebrations of Easter.

One of the best examples is pysanky, the ancient Ukrainian art of egg decorating, which is believed to pre-date Christianity.

People have been celebrating spring for as long as weather got cold in the winter, and food supplies dwindled. Birds usually lay their eggs in the spring, so eggs were a natural symbol for spring, rebirth, and new life. Rabbits are very fertile animals whose babies scampered about in spring, so they also became symbols of spring. Many ancient cultures celebrated the coming of spring with religious ceremonies.

When early missionaries arrived in Ukraine, they discovered pagan peoples who worshipped the sun, and who viewed the egg as a symbol of the sun (the yolk) and springtime. These people decorated their eggs in fantastic and beautiful ways, so the missionaries simply incorporated this tradition into their own Easter festivities. You can learn more about the ancient art form of pysanky at the Wiki Answers section "Pysanky Egg Art" which is under Hobbies and Collectibles/Arts and Crafts (see link below).

The first people to celebrate Easter were the disciples of Jesus the Christ and watched Him die for our sins. They didn't really understand why He had to die until He rose from the dead but it was sure a wonder and great cause for celebration. The entire Christian faith is one giant celebration of Easter, year-round.
