Toussaint L'Ouverture led an independence movement among the slaves of Haiti. This movement liberated Haiti from French control. Since Haiti was much more productive than Louisiana, Napoleon lost interest in maintaining control of the American mainland and his dreams were dashed.

The problems caused by the slave revolt in Haiti and the eventual loss of that Caribbean Island convinced Napoleon that to settle and exploit the Americas would require the expenditure of a fortune and manpower that was not available. He felt that getting rid of it would put a bee in the bonnet of his UK foes that was adequate compensation. He elected to sell off all of it instead of just the Port of New Orleans.

TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE led a slave revolt in Haiti, which disrupted Napoleon's dream of having an American Empire, since Haiti was the most prosperous French colony in the Americas. As a result, Napoleon was willing to sell the French possessions on the North American continent to the United States in what Americans term "the Louisiana Purchase".
