It was Lee's most brilliant display of tactical genius, completely wrong-footing the otherwise-successful Union commander Hooker.

But it cost him his loyal subordinate Stonewall Jackson, fatally wounded in this battle, and some say this would cost him victory at the forthcoming Gettysburg conflict.

The April/May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville during the American Civil War was caused by yet another Union attempt to threaten and seize the Confederate capital of Richmond (Virginia) and the Confederate intent to defeat it. Commanded by Major General Joseph Hooker, the Union army engaged in a complex maneuver in the area of Chancellorsville to surround the Confederate force in front of it as a first step toward Richmond. Led by General Robert E. Lee, the Confederate force skillfully defended its position so successfully as to throw back the Union offensive in a decisive fashion.

Resisted powerfully (if also at great loss) by General Robert E. Lee and his army, the Union force retreated at the end of the battle.

A spectacular win by the Confederates, but at a high price, since it was here that Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded. The Army of Northern Virginia was never the same after this.
