The ancient Greeks knew (most likely discovered too) the earth was not flat contrary to the popular myth that Columbus thought he would fall of the Earth if he sailed to far West.

We have no way of knowing which ancient civilizations realized that the Earth was spherical, but it was likely the Phoenicians, those sea-faring traders who roamed the Mediterranean and on to England and the Norse lands.
Many cultures have discovered this fact on their own, earliest recorded mention is the Ancient Greeks. For centuries, navigational methods and instruments have been based on a round Earth theory. There were people who did believe it is flat - such as the Flat Earth Society who base it on Biblical references to the Earth having 'four corners'.
Columbus is often thought to have aimed to disprove a flat earth theory, but in truth, no one at the time actually thought that was true. Rather, Columbus wanted to find an alternate route to India, and the disagreements he had with other people was about the Earth's size, not shape. He thought he'd find a shorter route, while everyone else said it was the longer route, and they were right. In the end he landed on an island off North America, though still believed he had arrived in India (which is where the term 'Indians' to describe Native Americans has come from).
According to Diogenes Laeritus, Pythagoras was the first person to actually claim that the world was round - although other people have also been claimed to have done so. Perhaps Pythagoras was the most famous person to do so. Early Greek philosophers had thought the world was round before, but were not very sure of the fact.
cris chaplain, tom sandercock and callum stoll were the founders
The entire human race (at first) thought the world was flat, because to a person at ground level, the world does look flat.
Ancient peoples all over the world knew the Earth was not flat.

Yes, it is. Satellite imaging will negate the hypothesis and prove that Earth is round, not flat.
Since the determination of the fact that Earth is spherical as opposed to flat, all scientists (after a short lag period) have accepted that it is so.
The Guptas discovered that the earth is round and that it spins on an axis.
because there has to be some kind of distortion of earths spherical shape
It is impossible to represent a curved object (our world) on a flat surface (a map) without distorting something. Different projections distort different things. The good thing about a globe is that nothing is distorted. As a result, they are a way better display of our earth.
It was not discovered, it was assumed until proved otherwise.
Galileo.
3000 years ago someone discovered the earth was round and before that they thought it was flat.
He discovered that the earth was round not flat.
Dear mom, i just discovered the world is a pair of balls!!! Sincerely,The guy who discovered the the world was a vagina
north america, native americans, and that the earth is not flat
the world is round, it was discovered by Christopher Columbus.:)Before that it was discovered by the ancient Greeks who measured the diameter of the earth to an accuracy of a few per cent.
In the bible, it says the Earth is Flat, so it is Flat. If God created the Earth and Jesus wrote the bible, the Earth is Flat
This had been known since the ancient Greeks. It is a fable that people didn't know this. Despite the fact we have seen earth from space there are people who think the earth is flat.
The Earth was never flat. The Flat Earth society believe they have proof that the Earth is flat but other no individuals or organisations have ever seriously considered that the Earth was not round since the ancient Greeks.
Nothing in the Universe is as large as the Earth AND flat. If the Earth were flat, it would be the only flat object, other than some small asteroids.
