Captain James Cook was the first to cross the Antarctic Circle, doing so in 1773. However, pack ice and the freezing of his ship's sails prevented him from reaching the Antarctic continent itself. The same thing happened when he again crossed the Antarctic Circle a year later.
Captain Thaddeus Bellingshausen, representing a Russian expedition, is said to have been the first to discover the actual continent of Antarctica, doing so in 1820.
The name was created as an "opposite form" of the existing term arctic. The south polar region was thus the "anti-arctic", shortened as with antacid.
The original cartographer's term for the unknown lands in the extreme Southern Hemisphere was Terra Australis (southern land), or more specifically Terra Australis incognita(unknown). The first actual sighting of the icy continent was likely by the 1820 Russian expedition of Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen.
However, the first formal use of the name "Antarctica" as a continental name is attributed to the Scottish cartographer John George Bartholomew during the 1890's.
The first well-documented evidence for the existence of a frozen southern continent came from the second expedition of Captain James Cook beginning in 1772. He did not actually see the continent but he did cross the Antarctic Circle (67° South Latitude) and saw the icebergs and frigid waters of the far southern ocean. The next expeditions did not occur until 1819 when William Smith, and James Bransfield a year later, discovered the South Shetland Islands and the shore of the Antarctic Peninsula.
