Henry VIII only ever had one legitimate son, Edward (to Jane Seymore, his 2nd wife) who did take the throne but died a few years later to be succeeded by his elder sister Mary, who was later succeeded by Elizabeth I.

Henry was reputed to have other sons through his mistresses though. Henry Fitzroy, whose mother was Elizabeth "Bessie" Blount. Fitzroy was made Duke of Richmond in 1525 in what some thought was Henry's first step in legitimatising him. Fitzroy died three years after his marriage to Mary Howard in 1533, while the King was trying to pass a law that would allow his otherwise illegitimate son to become King.

Henry Carey (Mary Boleyn's son) was never acknowledged, as Henry's other illegitimate son was, although there is high speculation that he was also Henry's biological child.

Henry Tudor vanquished Richard III in battle to end the Wars of the Roses and become King Henry VII.

His son, King Henry VIII, also of the Tudor Dynasty, succeeded him as King upon Henry VII's death.

Henry VIII had three children: Princess Mary, Princess Elizabeth, and Prince Edward. Each of these three succeeded him in their turn.

Prince Edward succeeded his father at a young age upon Henry VIII's death as King Edward VI. His reign was short, and he died of illness before reaching his majority.

Edward VI was succeeded by his older sister, Mary, as Queen Mary I ("Bloody Queen Mary"). Mary's reign lasted just over a decade before her death, also of sickness, ended her unhappy rule.

Mary I was succeeded by her sister, the last of Henry VIII's children, Elizabeth, as Queen Elizabeth I.
