∙ 10y agoThe long course record--one length of a 50m pool--is held by Brazilian swimmer César Cielo with a time of 20.91 seconds.
The short course record--two lengths (one lap) of a 25m pool--is held by South African Roland Schoeman with a time of 20.30 seconds.
Although both cover the same race distance, short course records are always faster because they include more turns, allowing the swimmer to push off of the wall.
The last American to hold the record was Tom Jager, who set the record on March 24, 1990 in Nashville, TN--twice. He set a time of 21.98 in the semifinal. He went on to set a new record of 21.81 seconds in the final. Of the six times that Jager set a world record time in the 50m freestyle, his performance in the final was the third time that the mark he had broken was his own. His first world record in the event was 22.40 seconds, set in Austin, TX in 1985.
