When and where did the first Ironman triathlon take place?

The First Ironman Triathlon was in Kona, Hawaii. Arranged by a Navy Commander John Collins. It was a combination of the three longest individual events for each of the sports. It consisted of the Waikiki Roughwater Swim (2.4 miles), Around-Oahu Bike Race (115 miles, originally a two-day event), and the Honolulu Marathon (26.2 miles)

∙ 14y agoThe first Ironman Triathlon took place on February 18, 1978, but it wasn't the organized event you see today. A Naval commander came up with the idea after he and his buddies were "discussing" who was the fittest athlete - the runner, the biker or the swimmer.
Having done triathlons before Commander John Collins suggested that the guys settle the debate by doing three of Hawaii's big races back to back. The races were the Honolulu Marathon, The Around-Oahu Bike Race, and the Waikiki Rough Water Swim. They were all very close to the race distances Ironman supports today. (The Around Oahu Bike Race was 3 miles longer, but for logistics the guys chopped off those 3 miles).
Gordon Haller was the first to earn the title Ironman by completing the course, with a time of 11 hours, 46 minutes, and 58 seconds. That time has since been eclipsed, in 1996 Luc Van Lierde with a time of 8 hours 4 minutes 8 seconds.

For men, it's Mark Allen and Dave Scott (both of them six times).

With gambits powers not being the most powerful it's my opinion that ironman would win, from a very long distance ironman could take him out. the only exception to this would be if gambit were to catch ironman without his suit on but the likely hood of gamit managing this is slim. i am a fan of both toons but it is ironman who would win this battle overall.
When you are swimming in a triathlon are you allowed to stop swimming?
When you are competing in a triathlon, there will be lifesavers/lifeboats etc around you so if there is any need to stop/take a breather or go back to shore you are easily able to.
