Both the Allied and Central powers saw the usefulness of Aircraft BUT mostly as artillery spotters. It was only when the pilots began carrying pistols and rifles to attack other reconnaissance aircraft that the use of aircraft as armed weapons of war began.

Airplanes were used from the very beginning of the war. The first use of the airplane in war predates WW1. The Italians used airplanes in their war with Turkey in 1911. They flew German built monoplanes and dropped gernades on Turkish troops.

Although there was still a great deal of skeptisim about whether airplanes had a role to play, the major militaries all entered the war with modest numbers of airplanes and even fewer trained pilots. They were used in the role of reconnaissance, a role traditionally held by cavalry units. When horses could no longer do the advanced scouting, airplanes filled the role.

On 22 August 1914, the true value of air recon was realised. Reports delivered by British Captain L.E.O. Charlton and Lieutenant V.H.N. Wadham, from their scouting patrol over Mons, revealed the BEF forces were being surrounded by German troops. Armed with this information, the British forces were able to order a quick retreat, thereby saving over 100,000 troops.
