Tesco is recorded as having provided the world's first operational Business-to-Consumer (B2C) teleshopping system in 1984. Prior to this, ecommerce already existed in the form of Business-to-Business (B2B) services, but these services were not provided for consumers (ie- "home shoppers").
Tesco's online shopping system was made possible by systems developed by Rediffusion Computers, and invented by the company's founder, Michael Aldrich, in 1979.

It can reduce air pollution if lots of people use Internet shopping, because the company may deploy one large truck to deliver all their goods. Whereas lots of people would have gone shopping and causes air pollution in their individual vehicles. Internet shopping should also reduce traffic, which one reason why there is a lot of pollution.
