Cookies appear to have their origins in 7th century AD Persia, shortly after the use of sugar became relatively common in the region.[4] They spread to Europe through the Muslim conquest of Spain. By the 14th century, they were common in all levels of society, throughout Europe, from royal cuisine to street v endors.

Ruth Keller invented the sugar cookie when she was trying to make a cake in her restaurant, and it went wrong, so she gave her customers the cookies that she accidentally made. now they are Americas favorite treat and bakery pastry.
Cookies were invented in many places around the world. In olden times when folks had wood or coal stoves they didn't have "burners" on top, the whole stove top was like one big burner (sort of like modern cook tops but made out of iron and some places stone). If grandma dripped some of the cake batter on the stove top while pouring the batter into the pan, by the time she got the cake pan into the oven to bake, the drops on the stove top had cooked and she'd lift them off with a spatula. Grandmas liked these cooked drops so much that they started to drip on purpose, they got so sloppy about pouring the batter into the pan that they had to start doubling the cake batter recipe. Now she made the family very happy with a fresh cake for dinner so she rewarded herself by eating those cooked drippings while she worked. Until, one day one of the kids caught her...
Well, that was many generations of grandmas ago. I don't know how many generations of grandmas got those drippings all to themselves, I guess we'll never know.
Ruth Wakefield invented the first chocolate chip cookie. One evening she wanted to make something new for her guest so she cut up peaces of a chocolate bar and added them to a cookie and that's when the first chocolate chip cookie was made.
