There were those who considered prehistoric life since well before the Common Era. But it was through the work of the 18th century scientist Georges Cuvier, who looked into comparative anatomy, that really got the ball rolling. A link can be found below.
One of the earliest was Mary Anning, who lived in England from 1799-1834. She is credited with finding the first ichthyosaur and plesiosaur specimens. Very little is known about her, but Hugh Torrens of the Department of Geology, Keele University, Staffordshire, UK. referred to her in his "Presidential Address: Mary Anning (1799-1847) of Lyme; 'the greatest fossilist the world ever knew'" British Journal of the History of Science, 1995, vol. 28, pp. 257-284.
Paleontology was created by the editor of a French journal in the year 1822. This refers to the study of earliest living organisms through fossils.
