Who invented the egg beater?

The electric beater, also called the electric mixer, was invented by Herbert Johnson in 1908. Johnson was employed at a company called Hobart Manufacturing Company, which is now called KitchenAid.

African American, Willis Johnson of Cincinnati, Ohio, invented a mechanical egg beater (U.S. pat# 292,821) on February 5, 1884.

It was really more a mixing machine for bakers and cooks. There were two bowls and you could beat eggs in one and flour and water etc in the other, at the same time.

It worked by turning a handle attached to a belt and pulley.

We don't know much more about Willis Johnson's life. According the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper, he was a former slave who knew how difficult it was to bake cakes. Cakes were usually baked by the slaves and were large and multi-layerered. Very fancy layered cakes like this are considered to be an American invention and they were very popular before the Civil War.

Johnson's invention reawakened the interest in elaborate multi-layered cakes.
