Legolas is a wood-elf of Mirkwood, the son of Thranduil, the Elvenking. He is thus Sindarin on his father's side (The royal house of Mirkwood came from Doriath and was thus of the Sindar) and either Sindarin or Silvan on his mother's side, with the latter being somewhat more likely.

In the movie Legolas had longish blond hair, pulled back in a ponytail with small braids on the sides, and he had no facial hair. He had the appearance of a young man though he may have been much older. His eyes were continually changing from brown to blue due to problems with Bloom's contact lenses. Legolas was graceful and swift, and he wielded both a longbow (his main weapon) and also two long knives. Legolas is a favorite among girls because of his "hotness" and with boys because he's a cool warrior.

Legolas hair color is not known and hotly debated; film adaptations have given him blond hair. Legolas does not wear a ponytail in the most recent film adaptation nor any other.
