Pluto is the Roman name of the god Hades, the god of the underworld. It follows the tradition of naming the planets after the Greek and Roman gods.
The name "Pluto" was proposed by Venetia Burney, an 11 year old schoolgirl from Oxford, England who was interested in astronomy and mythology.
The Disney Dog and the element plutonium were named after the "planet" Pluto.

"The discovery [of Pluto] made headlines across the globe. The Lowell Observatory, who had the right to name the new object, received over 1000 suggestions from all over the world, ranging from Atlas to Zymal.[21] Tombaugh urged Slipher to suggest a name for the new object quickly before someone else did.[21] Constance Lowell proposed Zeus, then Lowell, and finally her own first name. These suggestions were disregarded.[22]
The name Pluto was proposed by Venetia Burney (later Venetia Phair), an eleven-year-old schoolgirl in Oxford, England.[23] Venetia was interested in classical mythology as well as astronomy, and considered the name, that of the Roman god of the underworld, appropriate for such a presumably dark and cold world. She suggested it in a conversation with her grandfather Falconer Madan, a former librarian at the University of Oxford's Bodleian Library. Madan passed the name to Professor Herbert Hall Turner, who then cabled it to colleagues in the United States.
The object was officially named on March 24, 1930. Each member of the Lowell Observatory was allowed to vote on a short-list of three: Minerva (which was already the name for an asteroid), Cronus (which had garnered a bad reputation after being suggested by an unpopular astronomer named Thomas Jefferson Jackson See), and Pluto. Pluto received every vote. The name was announced on May 1, 1930. Upon the announcement, Madan gave Venetia five pounds as a reward.
The name was soon embraced by wider culture. The Disney character Pluto, introduced in 1930, was named in the object's honor."

Probably from the then recently discovered planet, in turn named after the lord of the underworld in Greco-Roman mythology and the first two letters coinciding with the predictor (but not discoverer) Percival Lowell, better known for his Martian theories.
The Roman God of the Underworld
Pluto was named after the Roman god of darkess and the underworld
Like the other planets (or former planet in this case), Pluto is named for a Roman god. The Greek equivalent of Pluto is Hades
Pluto barks. Goofy talks.
Carl.......Just kidding its PLUTO
"Spike" is the bulldog's name from 'Tom and Jerry' .
Pluto and/or Goofy .
dude it is a cartoon that is what they do : why can spongebob talk? No. I, Sheekgirl519, say that goofy is a REAL character but Pluto isn't. Why does Mickey talk? Why does Daisy talk? these are all characters that are SUPOSSED to talk. Pluto is simply a PET, not an actual character. Same with Minnie's pet cat. (her name escapes me) she dosent talk. not supposed to.
Well, There Are Two Of Every Animal that is a main character. Example: Donald and Daisy are Ducks. Minne and Mickey Are Mice. Pluto and Goofy are both Dogs. There has been much controversy over the years on why Pluto is a "regular" dog that walks on all fours and barks, whereas Goofy is a dog that walks upright and talks. No official statement has ever been made on this by the Disney company.

Actually Walt Disney created a cartoon dog character named Pluto to the Mickey Mouse cartoon series in the former planet's honor after the planet was discovered. The name Pluto was proposed by a 11 year old little girl named Vernetia Burney from Oxford, England. The name was derived from "Pluto" the god of the underworld in classic mythology.
Pluto was owned by Mickey Mouse. Sandy was the name of the dog that belonged to Annie.
I am either a fictional dog, a dwarf planet, or a Roman god.
