The Governor General of Canada represents Her Majesty the Queen of Canada on the federal stage. The Governor General is appointed by the Queen on the advice of the prime minister. The Governor General performs most of the Queen's functions.

At Confederation, the Lieutenant Governor of each province represented the federal Government through the Governor General; however, constitutional jurisprudence has since led to the evolution of the Lieutenant Governors as actual representatives of the Queen, bypassing the Governor General.

The Queen is not represented at the territorial level; however, the role of the Commissioner is almost the same, in function, to that of a Lieutenant Governor. Rather than representing the Queen, however, the commissioners of the territories represent the Minister of Indian Affairs and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians.
