John Quincy Adams was the first President to be photographed (see Related Links), but this photo was taken in 1843 long after he left office and was serving in Congress.

According to Whitehouse.gov, the first President to be photographed while in office was James Polk. There are copies of what look like a photo of William Henry Harrison, but I think these are a photo of a painting or drawing of Harrison made sometime later.

I think it was James K. Polk, but it's a little confusing because he was not the first president to be photographed (probably John Quincy Adams), nor the first to have his inauguration photographed (James Buchanan), but he seems to be the first photographed in the White House

The first presidential inauguration to be photographed was James Buchanan's, on March 4, 1857. The photograph isn't much to look at, but it was the first, and there's a link to it below.

Best guess for the first U.S. President ever to be photographed while in office was James Knox Polk, who was President from March 4, 1845 to March 4, 1849. John Quincy Adams was the first president to photographed, but his photo was taken after he was President and while he was serving in Congress

There is what appears to be an early photo of William Henry Harrison but it may have been taken before he was elected. There is also a photo of John Tyler but it was most likely taken after he left office. It seems fairly certain that Polk was photographed while he was president.
