At the very end of the chapter when the name of the girl tribute is called Katniss' sister Prim is called. Katniss is shocked, and in the very beginign of chapter 2 she volunteers herself as a tribute in replacement of her sister.

∙ 11y agoKatniss has three family members: her father, her mother, and her sister Primrose Everdeen.
Mr. Everdeen was killed in a mining accident when Katniss was eleven years old. His death caused Mrs. Everdeen (Katniss' mother) to spiral into a deep depression.
Primrose (Prim) is four years younger than Katniss - making her 12 in The Hunger Games, and 13 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Prim is extremely important to Katniss, as well as a vital part of each of the books.

∙ 10y agoKatniss's dad died in a mine explosion when she was younger. She lives with her mom and her younger sister Prim. After her dad died, her mom slipped into deep depression, leaving Katniss to take care of Prim. Prim also has a cat and goat.
