No one knows for sure when Iced Tea was invented. The legend is that an Englishman named Richard Blechynden was selling hot tea at the 1904 World's Fair in Saint Louis, Missouri. The weather was so hot that no one wanted to drink hot tea. He was desperate to sell the tea so he put ice in it. People then bought the drink as a cool refreshment.
No English man " invented" ice tea. Cookbooks from the 1800's have ice tea recipes in them. The oldest recipes are with green tea and some with a liquor added. These were called "punches". The 1839 cookbook The Kentucky Housewife lists ice tea recipes. The oldest sweet tea recipes come from 1879 cookbook Housekeeping in Old Virginia. The first recipe using black tea was published in 1884. It cites on page 112 " that ice tea is just not a southern drink." In 1893 ice tea was sold at the Worlds Fair.
It was invented by Ferolito of the Vultaggio & Sons Company.
