As of 2011, Syria has been embroiled in a civil war. Al-Halqi is the Prime Minister of the currently established government, and has been since 2012 August 9. His predecessor Prime Minister Riyad Farid Hijab fled to Jordan, declaring support for the Syrian opposition.
