The World's Most powerful NationThe United States is widely regarded at present as the strongest nation. The US spends more on its military than the next 20 nations combined.

From the 1950s to the 1990s the US and Soviet Russia were viewed as about equally powerful. During WWI and WWII Germany attempted to establish control of the world, but was beaten back by the combined efforts of many other nations.

In 1900 Great Britain was the world's dominant power, despite having lost its American colonies 125 years earlier. Great Britain would have been the world's dominant power from 1588 to about 1947.

Before 1588 Spain was the world's dominant power. In 1588, while attacking England, much of the Spanish armada was destroyed by a storm.

It is difficult, and often highly contentious, to discern which nation is the most 'powerful'. A variety of metrics may be used and may be given different weights to come to a conclusion, but rarely is any agreement made.

There are different answers depending on economic power, military power, geographic range, technological capabilities, allegiances, etc...

However, most people see the US and China as being among the strongest nations. Russia still has a strong military force despite a weaker economy.

India and China both have good economic potential and also have a very dense population.

Britain and other major powers like Germany, France, and others are also considered to be powerful, but generally not in quite the same league.

It depends how you define "strongest".

The US, UK, France, Russia and China share the title of the strongest military.

The US has a formidable air force and navy. It also has decent armoured divisions (tanks, etc). The US has decent special forces which operate almost globally. They have a good missile system and anti-ballistic system.

The UK has a superior navy and formidable air force. The US when fighting for independence realised that British ships were always superior, so they copied them. The UK also has decent armoured divisions and has more types of armoured vehicles than the US, such as all terrain "mobile fortresses" and long-distance mine sweepers. The only other country that has a similar advanced armoured division to the UK is the Netherlands. The UK is also in an extremely defensive position, it hasn't been successfully invaded for hundreds of years because of this.

France is home to the world's best counter-terrorism forces which operates in multiple countries. They also have a decent air force. France and the UK also work together military-wise by political pact, which strengthens their forces.

Russia has the numbers infantry-wise and large, but mostly outdated, armoured divisions. Infantry are essential to get to places that vehicles cannot. Russia also has one of the world's most advanced missile systems, they can detect a missile launch from thousands of miles away and track the trajectory in a matter of milliseconds - technology that even the US hasn't yet mastered.

China also has the numbers infantry-wise. They are also in one of the most ideal defensive locations, their country being surrounded by mountains and hostile deserts. China also has one of the largest submarine fleets in the world.

This is difficult to quantify. The Chinese army is by far the largest. The US Army is by far the most technological. The Isreali and German armies have some of the toughest special forces units. The British and US armies are among the most mobile.

If you classify the "strongest" army by which has the highest budget, it would be the US by a mile. China, the second most funded army in the world, has a budget less than half that of the US.

However, it depends on if that is what you mean by strength. North Korea dedicates over 90% of it's GDP to its army. Granted, it is a very poor country, so that doesn't mean much.
