The versatile filmmaker Warren Beatty has accomplished the feat twice. His 1978 comedy "Heaven Can Wait" earned him nominations for Best Picture (as a producer), Best Actor, Best Director (shared with Buck Henry) and Best Adapted Screenplay (shared with Elaine May). His 1981 historical drama "Reds" won him nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (shared with Trevor Griffiths). Beatty won in the Best Director category, his only Oscar win.

Orson Welles shared the 1941 Best Original Screenplay award for "Citizen Kane" with Herman J. Mankiewicz. Welles also was nominated for Best Picture (as a producer), Best Actor and Best Director. But if "Citizen Kane" had been named Best Picture, the Oscar would have gone to RKO Radio Pictures since it was the custom to reward the studios in those days.
