Aha. Trick question! According to all Muslims but the Mutazillites, the Qur'an is not written, but is pre-existing. However, if the question means who assembled the Qur'an in its present form, that was Caliph Uthman.

Muslims believe that the Quran is based on revelations that the prophet Muhammad received from the Archangel Gabriel. The first written version was compiled by Caliph Uthman a couple of decades after Muhammad's death. The origin being 'Gabriel's revelations to Muhammad' is in the Muslim world not a subject that is open to any academic discussion; doubting it is considered heresy. But other theologians and historians have pointed out that many of the Quran's texts and teachings seem heavily influenced by Jewish scriptures and by early Christian teachings - which would figure, since Muhammad had been in regular and close contact with Christians and Jews during his travels as a merchant.

Quran is not a human written book. Quran, holy book of Islam religion, is God revelation to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Gabriel (Jibril). Quran revelation started in year 610 AD through year 632 AD (year of prophet Muhammad death).

After Muhammad's death in 632 CE, there was no collection of his revelations. Consequently, many of his followers tried to gather all the known revelations and write them down in codex form. Soon there were codices of several scholars. As Islam spread, there were variants known as the Metropolitan Codices in Mecca, Medina, Damascus, Kufa and Basra. For orthodox Muslims of today, the Quran we have is the one that was established under the third caliph, Uthman (644-656), in the seventh century. Muslim orthodoxy holds that Uthman's Quran contains all of the revelation delivered to the community faithfully preserved without change or variation and that acceptance of the Uthmanic Quran was all but universal from the day of its distribution, although this position can not be supported by the historical evidence.

According to one tradition, Uthman became aware that serious disputes had broken out among his troops from different provinces in regard to the correct readings of the Quran. Uthman chose Zayd ibn Thabit to prepare the official text. Zayd carefully revised the Quran, comparing his version with the "leaves" in the possession of Umar's daughter. As instructed, in case of difficulty as to the reading, Zayd followed the dialect of the Quraysh, the Prophet's tribe. The copies of the new version, which must have been completed between 650 and Uthman's death in 656, were sent to Kufa, Basr, Damascus and perhaps Mecca, and of course one copy was kept in Medina. All other versions were ordered to be destroyed.

Others doubt the authenticity of this tradition. They say that it is unlikely that an official Quran would have been given to Umar's daughter for safekeeping, and that it is unlikely that such an important task could have been completed in such a short time. There is no evidence of any sort of authority attached to Abu Bakr's Quran. In fact, in the different provinces, other collections of the Quran were considered authoratitive.

Difficulties in the early consonantal Arabic text meant that certain letters were indistinguishable and there were no signs for short vowels. This lead to thousands of different readings of particular verses, even from the Uthmanic codex. In the end, three systems prevailed, those of Warsh (died 812) from Nafi of Medina, Hafs (died 805) from Asim of Kufa, and al-Duri (died 860) from Abu Amr of Basr. Two versions seem to be in relatively modern use: that of Asim of Kufa through Hafs, which was adopted in the Egyptian edition of the Koran in 1924, and that of Nafi through Warsh, which is used in parts of Africa other than Egypt. The existence of variant versions is, of course, inconsistent with the doctrine of the Koran being the direct word of God, and an exact copy of the original in heaven.
