The Rising Action in Holes is that when Stanley's friendship with Zero alienates the other boys at the camp and the fact that Zero digs part of Stanley's hole makes the other boys jealous. This leads to mounting tension between the boys, which eventually erupts in a fight. The results of the fight lead Zero to run away from camp, eventually causing Stanley to follow him. Once the two have run away there is no going back and they must make concrete decisions about their future plans.
The rising action of the book "Holes" revolves around Stanley Yelnats at Camp Green Lake as he dig holes daily under the watch of the warden. As Stanley and his fellow campers uncover the history of the cursed town, the mystery behind the holes deepens and tensions rise among the characters. Together, they uncover secrets that tie their pasts together with the present.
Stanley yelnats and his family are under a curse. The curse begins with his great-great grandfather Elya Yelnats, and was passed down through generations. Now Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake to help build character by digging holes all day. Stanley realizes there is more going on then digging holes to build character and the warden is up to something.
The conflict is that the Yelnats' family was cursed my Madam Zeroni- bringing them bad luck. But then, Stanley (the fourth) helped a Zeroni family member up the side of a mountain to drink from the water. This broke the curse.
The curse got spell because many generations ago a Yelnats' family member didn't carry Madam Zeroni up the mountain.
As I read the first of the novel, I encounter why the book is called Holes and a little of what is happening. "Why would anyone go to Camp Green Lake? Most campers weren't given a choice. Camp Green Lake is a camp for bad boys. If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy. That was what some people thought" (Sachar 8).
