Jamaica's Usain"Lightening"Bolt, who's records may get better according to his coaches, but even if they don't I think both his 200M & 100M records may stand for decades. When he ran his 100M record of 9.58, my jaw almost hit the floor. That meant in the past year he became the first man to break the 9.7 barrier, and a year later, the 9.6 barrier (no man ever came close to accomplishing that). I would feel very confident by already calling him the athlete of the century. When you look over the history of the improvement in 100M times you'll see that it often takes a couple decades just to advance the record between .1 and .2 seconds. When the juiced up Canadian sprinter, Ben Johnson ran an unheard of 9.79 in 1988, it was so fast that Carl Lewis thought he had to be on steroids, and he was right. Yet it took 11 years for the US. sprinter, Maurice Greene, to tie Johnson's illegal and barred record. That was 24 years ago and now it wouldn't come close to beating men like Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, and Bolt. The amazing thing is Bolt's coaches aren't just wishful thinking when they say they're sure Bolt will at least break 9.58 and could get as low as the 9.4's. If so, that could stand for 30 to 40 years, and would easily break the previously held record for longest lasting track record. The shorter sprints aren't the only races to keep your eyes on. I just saw where the world record for the 800M ( they say run, but that's becoming the most grueling sprint) was set at 1:41.09 That's like almost running back to back 50 400M runs. If you've ever run the 1/4 mile or know someone who was unfortunate to be assigned to run it by his track coach, they'll tell you it's the most painful, stressful, and grueling race. I ran it occasionally in high school, and the summer after my senior year, I ran a 49.0 against a guy, two years my senior, who boasted he'd easily beat me. He ran a 51.9. But I had all I could do to hurry and get some privacy so I could hurl up most of my internal organs. My friends who had gathered for the legendary race still call the spot the Nebz' Memorial Puke. I would compare a 9.58 100M to a 125 HR season in MLB, a 100 points per game average in the NBA's 82 game season, or 50 (rushing or receiving combined) TD's in a 16 game season in the NFL. If he ever runs in the 9.4s, I'll have to come up with some better similes.
