I guess the quiestion is too generall that no one could point at only one keyboardist and say that's it.

Generally when people talk about keyboardist, they mean prog rock keyboardists.

But there are so many brilliant keyboardists in jazz and funk and fusion.

Here are my suggestions without any order:

Edgar Winter, is the first rock keyboardist to have a serious hit with an instrumental-synth-solo-based song ( 1973 top 100 # 16) , he was the first one who used a straped on keyboard. You can listen to "Frankenstein", that's the song I was talking about.

Richard Write, pink Floyd's keyboardist had another style. He plays very slow but his melodies are all so beautiful. The intro of "Shine On Crazy diamond" is the example of his style. He is also a master of creating unique atmospheres for pink Floyd's songs.

Jon Lord: He is to my opinion, the archetype of a keyboardist. After releasing some solo albums and some albums with deep purple, he said he have chosen Hammond organ over synthesizers. His organ playing is allwayse a source of inspiration for young keyboardists and his synth works are so amazing. He has two different sides, a rock star and a Classical Music composer. You can experience both on "Gememi Suit". For a view of his organ and synth style listen to the song "Burn".

Keith Emmerson, some said he is the Jimmi Hendrix of the keyboards. I agree. A geat synth wiz and a great show man. The first rockstar to have hit song with a moog solo. Listen to "lucky man".

David Rosenthal: He inspired a new generation of keyboardists but I don't know why he never got his place as on of the worlds most brilliant keyboardists. Anyway he was a new blood at the time he joind Rainbow. Listen to rainbow's "Death Alley Driver". If you willing to know more about him you can visit his web page.
