There's no universally accepted "Father of Arithmetic" but there are two valid Greek candidates
- Archimedes, a scientist, astronomer and mathematician born in Syracuse (Sicily) around 282 BC. His theorems and proofs are the basis of modern calculus. He studied the math behind simple machines and the force of buoyancy.
- Euclid, said to be the "Father of Geometry." He lived in Alexandria circa 300 BC and wrote the 13-volume treatise "Elements" (Stoicheia), which contains many of the geometric and mathematical proofs that are still taught today.

∙ 8y agoIt is thought that some counting systems began at least 22,000 years ago. Many were just ways to tally or count things like sheep or lumber as it was taken off a ship. Very early also there was no concept or ways to indicate zero.Written records indicate the Egyptians and Babylonians used all the elementary arithmetic operations as early as 4,000 years ago. It took many different people to form what we use as arithmetic today. But Euclid probably best fits the title of the Father of Arithmetic.
