Van Morrisson wrote and recorded the song with his group called "Them" in or around 1965. It has been a staple of garage bands ever since. I think maybe the Kinks also recorded it in the seventies.
The song has also been recorded by many other groups in various permutations, including, but not limited to, The Gnats, Shadows of Knight, Enchantment, the 101ers, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and R.E.M.
Possibly the most famous cover of the song was an almost complete reworking by Patti Smith, which begins with the famous line, "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine."
