In Pre-columbian times, Indian societies were responsible for the protection of themselves. Usually through guidance of a leader, like a chief or religious leader, and their armies. The U.S./Indian tribes relationships complexity is hard to narrow down in one paragraph. There are at least many answers as there are the number of tribes. For most tribes, it might be safe to assume, that the United States serves as protectorate. Within tribes today there are Police, Emergency, and Fire services just like for other American city or town.
