WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER And now, with great joy, on 18 February announcement that I will hold a consistory in which I will appoint 22 new members of the College of Cardinals.As is known, the Cardinals have the task of helping the Successor of Peter in carrying out his ministry of confirming the brethren in the faith, and that the principle and foundation of unity and communion in the Church.Here are the names of new cardinals:

1. Archbishop Fernando Filoni , Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples;

2. Monsignor Manuel Monteiro de Castro , Major Penitentiary;

3. Bishop APRIL SANTOS Y CASTELLÓ , Archpriest of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore;

4. Archbishop Antonio Maria Veglio , president of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People;

5. Monsignor Giuseppe Bertelli , President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and President of the Governorate of the same State;

6. Archbishop Francesco Coccopalmerio , President of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts;

7. Bishop JOÃO Braz de Aviz , Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life;

8. Archbishop Edwin O'Brien FREDERIK , Pro-Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem;

9. Rev. Domenico Calcagno , President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See;

10. Archbishop Giuseppe Versaldi , President of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs of the Holy See;

11. His Beatitude GEORGE Alencherry , Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly of the Syro-Malabar (India);

12. Archbishop Thomas Christopher Collins , Archbishop of Toronto (Canada);

13. Bishop DOMINIK DUKA , Archbishop of Prague (Czech Republic);

14. Archbishop Willem Jacobus Eijk , Archbishop of Utrecht (Netherlands);

15. Monsignor Giuseppe Betori , Archbishop of Florence (Italy);

17. Rev. Rainer Maria Woelk , Archbishop of Berlin (Federal Republic of Germany);

I also decided to raise the dignity of cardinal a revered prelate, who carries out his ministry as Pastor of a Church and Father, and three worthy clergymen, who are distinguished for their commitment to serving the Church.

They are:

1. His Beatitude Lucian Muresan , Major Archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Julia of the Romanians (Romania);

2. Bishop Julien Ries , priest of the Diocese of Namur and professor emeritus of history of religions at the Catholic University of Louvain;

3. Fr Prospero Grech , OSA, Professor Emeritus of various Roman universities and Consultant to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith;

4. Father Karl Becker , SJ, Professor Emeritus of the Pontifical Gregorian University, Consultant for many years the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The new cardinals come from various parts of the world and held various ministries in the service of the Holy See or direct contact with the faithful such as the Fathers and Pastors of particular Churches.

I would ask everyone to pray for the newly elected members, asking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church to bear witness always with courage and dedication to their love for Christ and his Church.

VATICAN CITY: Indian Cardinal Cleemis Thottunkal is the youngest Cardinal taking part in the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI.

Also known as Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the 53-year-old Thottunkal is the archbishop of Thiruvananthapuram, capital of Kerala. He was one of the last Cardinals appointed by Benedict in November 2012.
