Major General George Pickett is most often named but he commanded only one of the three divisions involved. Brigadier General James Johnston Pettigrew commanded one of the divisions but is spared mention by historians because he died on 17 July during the Confederate retreat to Virginia. Major General Issac Ridgeway Trimble was the other commander and he managed to live to the ripe old age of 85 without sharing in the responsibility because his division was in trail to Pettigrew.
Pickett is most often named because his troops almostmade the breakthrough at the angle. In tuth all three divisions were under the command of Lieutenant General James Longstreet who had forseen and predicted the disaster. General Robert E. Lee had created the plan and issued the order. His subordinates only carried it out.
there was a few people who led this charge thier names were : Jack Scott, Matthew Rawcliffe, and Alex mcintyre. we fought the back into the trenches on all sides until matthew sweeped at 50 confederates spines away from there bodies using his favourited bayonet, alex jumped round the corner with a sort of axw and cleaved them out of his, when bullets whizzed past there heads from a sniped named jack, brains bled from there ears and there skulls shattered, finally alex went into a mad rage and started feasting on the dead bodies, matt stood there smugly cleaning the blood from his blade shouting i killed the most. the three walked away closely talking.
General Robert E Lee
It is true that Robert E. Lee ordered the charge, but he himself did not lead the charge at Gettysburg, Major General George Pickett lead his forces in the charge that now bears his name (Pickett's Charge).
The infamous charge at the US Civil War Battle of Gettysburg began under the leadership on Confederate Major General James Longstreet. The plan was decided upon on July 1,1863. Longstreet was unenthusiastic about the plan developed by generals Ewell and Early. Lee tentatively decided to turn the Union position as early as possible the next morning, July 2. Longstreet was to slam into the Federal left, then turning and rolling northward along Cemetery Hill. General Ewell was to make a diversionary attack.Things started off wrong at the onset.
The dawn attack from Longstreet was delayed. So much so that he did not have all his troops ready until 4 PM. The 7 AM deadline came and went. Longstreet was nine hours late.
Longstreet's information was that few or no Federal troops on the hill called Little Round Top. For a time that was correct. However, by the time the Confederates began their assault, Union General Warren, the chief engineer under General George Meade, created a defensive deployment of Union forces in the nick of time. Some of Longstreet's men had reached the top of the hill, however, by nightfall they were driven back.
The second charge upon Little Round Top is the one most remembered, however. That was led by General Pickett using most of Longstreet's soldiers. The Confederate effort on that day was so determined in that if they were successful, they would have broken the center of the Union forces and thereby win the battle of Gettysburg. It was not to be .
There was plenty of blame to spread around on the Confederate side.
Longstreet spent his lifetime defending the charge held against him that he did not have his troops ready to attack at dawn on July 2.
Although that day did not decide the outcome of the battle, day 3, July 3rd did.
Lee chose to make the decision that actually put the loss on his shoulders. The name of Pickett has wrongly been held as the general responsible for the loss.
