What was the feudal system in the middle ages?

If you mean before the reign of William of Normandy, England was ruled by Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Eastern England was most populated but the population was much smaller than it is today. Most people were peasants and only some where rich. Earls ruled the counties or states that England was divided into.

There were 3 levels or ranks.

1. The church. It told everyone else what to do and how to do it. They taught that man was born in sin and had to spend his/her life repenting that sin. It control the world very tightly which was easy to do since people couldn't read or write and they could.

2. The nobility. They were the strong part. They held the army and the weapons and were suppose to protect people. Often they were more like the mob than protectors. They could kill people at will and do pretty much what they wanted with no one to stop them. The church did have some power over the nobility.

3. Peasants/serfs This was about 90% of the population and they had nothing. No power, no money, couldn't read/write, had to pay takes to the other two, and died in their wars. Life was not fun or nice for them.

the feudal system was a system where William would grant land to the barons, in return the barons would have to provide money and knights, the barons would then grant land to the knights, in return the knights would have to provide military services and protection, the knights would then grant land to villeins, in return they would have to provide food services when demanded.

king give some of the land to his barons he done this because they helped him to win The Battle of Hastings. Because the barons couldn't manage all of the lands they gave some to the Knights and in replace the knights promised to serve in Williams's army for 40 days a year. The knights were good at fighting but the problem was they needed some food to be produced so they got some peasants so that they can produce some food.
