Calypso was originally an entertainment technique developed in the West Indies. It involved both music and a particular use of the language. The original purpose was to insult the other persons Momma. Then the other person would create an insult by changing only one word in the first insult. The person who failed to answer back was the "winner."
Calypso gave the black people of the West Indies tremendous facility with the English language. As a result, even though they do not have the same education as the native born, when they move to England, they generally do fairly well in the British School System.
The Calypso jokes came to the United States and became the Yo Mamma jokes. They do not require the same facility with the language and have not produced the same gains in Education.
