There was a good deal of variation, which should not be a surprise, as the Middle Ages were a period of European history of a thousand years. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, theatrical performances were banned by the Church, as part of an effort to put an end to gladiatorial combats and such similar spectacles, with which they were associated. Nevertheless, theater survived. Theatrical productions in the East developed from theater of the Roman Empire and Greece. The large scale productions were in the outdoor theaters we often see in pictures of ancient times. We have very little in the way of records of the early Byzantine period, but the suggestions are that it was also produced indoors, possibly in large rooms. In the West, productions in amphitheaters were no longer possible in the Early Middle Ages because of the lack of economic stability. Theatrical groups became itinerant, performing at any convenient place. Among these places were crossroads, places near bridges, and natural depressions in the countryside that could be used as amphitheaters. Town squares and courtyards became important places for productions. Large wagons, called pageant wagons, had stages on top of them, so the actors could be seen by the crows. Though mummers plays were not acceptable to the Church, the morality plays, mystery plays, and miracle plays were, and some churches allowed them to be staged within the church itself.
