He also too out college loans and worked part-time. Both Michelle and Barack Obama have said that it took many years to pay off the college loans they both took out.

For his time at Columbia (1981-1983), he had some savings from part-time jobs, and he also got some financial aid and help from his family. For his years at Harvard Law School (1989-1991), he had worked for five years before beginning his law degree, and paid for some of it from those earnings. He also received student loans. You may read some internet rumors about money he was given as a "foreign student"-- but this is false. He received financial aid as an American student, and although it took a while, he finally paid the loans off.
