President Richard Nixon ran on a promise of ending the war in Vietnam with honor, and his method was called Vietnamization, or the carefully planned and executed passing of all combat material and missions over to the South Vietnam military. It began in 1969. By April, 1973, all U.S. combat troops had left Vietnam, leaving the war to the South Vietnamese to defend themselves. By the end of April, 1975 - just two years later, North Vietnamese forces succeeded in taking control of South Vietnam and thus unifying into a single country.
